XML Web Services & APIs

Enhance Your Application With Third-Party Services

XML Web services are software applications running on a server that provide functionality that remote clients can call to perform some task, retrieve data or upload data. Clients can be running on any platform and communicate to the server over the Internet by means of XML messages encoded in the SOAP standard. Web services can publish their API (Application Programming Interface) by means of the Web Services Description Language (WSDL) protocol.

There are many web services available on the Internet that can be integrated into your web applications, desktop applications and mobile applications. Many of these services are free of charge. Web services span a large range of categories including weather, email, address lookup, GPS and mapping functionality, mortgage calculation, and so on.

There are also many web services available that are APIs but do not conform to the XML web service standard as defined by the W3C. They may in fact be XML based but are generally proprietary. Google is one company known for publishing a host of web services that do not follow the XML web service standard.
